British Citizens Abroad

If you are a British citizen but do not currently reside in the United Kingdom, you can apply to change your name by Deed Poll. You can change any part of your name as many times as you wish to so long as you are not doing so for fraudulent purposes.

If you intend to change the name on your passport we advise that you first contact you local British Embassy to ensure that there are no special requirements that must be met before they will change your British Passport. In the majority of countries there are no problems but there are some that insist that the execution (signing) of your Deed Poll is witnessed by a solicitor.

When you receive your Deed Poll document you must sign it and have the signing witnessed. You can then start sending it off to various organisations to notify them of your name change. The Deed Poll will be accepted by all departments as proof of your change of name and they can update their records to show your new name.
