You can legally alter your name with a deed poll in the UK, and many people choose to do so for various reasons. Although it’s not a complicated process, a lot of people tend to make the same errors. If you want your deed poll to be legitimate and effective, without errors, follow the guidelines in this blog.
Use the Correct Format and Language
The legal language should be clear and concise. Use formal language only, and the deed poll should include an accurate declaration of your desire to alter your name. You must also ensure that two independent witnesses, neither of whom should be connected to you, must sign the deed poll.
Do Not Miss Details Out
Name the new name you want to adopt and give your entire birth name, including any middle names. You must also include your date of birth and current address. Check that your signature is legible and easy to read. The deed poll must bear the witnesses’ signatures, which must be in the witnesses’ own handwriting and also legible.
Include all Necessary Identification Documents
You may need to provide copies of your passport, driving license and birth certificate. Also, if your name has changed because of a marriage, you should include a copy of the relevant marriage certificate.
Not Changing Your Driver’s License or Passport After the Deed Poll Takes Effect
You must change your driver’s license, passport, and any other official documents that require it. Tell your credit card and bank that your name has changed and any other financial company you hold accounts with. You should check all your legal contracts to ensure your new name is reflected. Failing to do so could have serious consequences and is a big error. Revise your tax documents to reflect your new name and inform utility providers, medical providers and your employer.
Using an Out-of-Date Deed Poll Form
Make sure the deed poll form you use follows all the rules and regulations currently in effect. If you follow these guidelines, your deed poll will have a better chance of being legitimate and effective without errors, meaning your name change will be swift and hassle-free.
