Name Change After Marriage – A Handy Guide

A wedding can be a whirlwind – the special day is a dream, and hopefully, the honeymoon continues the celebrations. But then comes the tedious part – changing your name! Of course, not every couple choose to share the same surname, but many follow tradition, either with one partner taking the other’s name or changing their names to double-barrelled ones. This is a handy guide to legally changing your name after marriage.

Decide on Your Name

Your name is a key aspect of your identity, and something you’ll answer to daily, so choosing a new name is important! You may take your partner’s name or go double-barrelled. To represent a new beginning, one can create a new name or use one’s maiden name as a middle name. Changing your name legally requires a deed poll. No time constraint or legal duty exists to change your name. You can preserve your birth name or use your new name right away! Many women now keep their maiden name professionally but change it personally.

Get The Correct Documents Together

Name changes in the UK require a legal document. An original marriage certificate, decree absolute, or deed poll are examples. Your marriage/civil partnership certificate allows you to assume your partner’s surname or double barrel your surnames (with or without a hyphen). Same for males and women. Double barrel surnames or take your spouse’s surname with a deed poll. A deed poll is needed to alter your first or middle name or create a new surname.

Identifying which organisations will accept a simple copy of your legal document and which require originals or certified copies can be time-consuming, so keep some of each on hand. Some businesses need original paperwork from a wedding celebrant, register office, solicitor, divorce court, or UK deed poll service provider. Others will accept a photocopy certified as a real copy by an approved person. Some companies will accept a clear, legible photocopy or 2-5MB scanned copy. Get 2–4 original copies of your legal paperwork to send several name change requests simultaneously.

Make A List and Get Prepared

The list might be overwhelming, from changing your name with the DVLA and local authority to amending credit card and mortgage data. Most adults have over 24 government and company contacts to update their names. Planning for lead times, travel arrangements, crucial dates, and significant events are smart. At least one photo ID should be prioritised. Our online DVLA name change guide has everything you need.

Many name change requests can be made online or in person. However, certain companies and government agencies require you to mail your proof. To speed up the delivery of original certificates, including a self-addressed envelope with a big stamp. To protect your valuable documents, utilise Royal Mail tracked/special delivery.
