If you are non-binary and want to change your name, you can use a deed poll in the same way as anyone else changing their name. There is no requirement to give a particular reason for your name change. A deed poll simply provides evidence that you have stopped using your previous name and adopted a new one. You can change your first name, middle names or surname, or change your full name altogether. What Can I Change?
You might want to choose a name that better reflects your identity, change a gendered first or middle name, or simply start using a name you already use socially.
A deed poll can be used to:
- Change one or more of your existing names
- Add or remove middle names
- Change your surname
- Change the spelling of your name
- Adopt an entirely new full name
There are some general restrictions on names, for example, a new name must be pronounceable and cannot normally include numbers or symbols. These rules apply to everyone, not just non-binary people. What About My Title or Gender?
A deed poll changes your name, not your legal gender or title. GOV.UK specifically states that titles such as Mr, Mrs, Sir or Doctor cannot be changed using a deed poll.
Once your deed poll has been signed correctly, you can use it as evidence of your new name when updating your records. Different organisations may have their own requirements, so you may need to contact banks, employers and other record holders individually. GOV.UK also explains how an unenrolled deed poll can be made and used as evidence of a new name.
You don’t need to have changed your legal gender before changing your name. If you have decided on a name that feels right for you, a deed poll can provide the documentary evidence needed to start using it officially.
